Last week I spent some time looking for a good shortcut program for Windows. My requirement was that it needed to be free of cost and provide good features. I ended up spending a lot of time downloading applications, which boasted freeware in big letters. Well, these freeware applications ended up being nothing but evaluation copies. I hate when software developers try to get you hooked and lie about the cost. Honestly, I did not even open most of the cost-related applications. My search went on!

Have you ever presented a webcast? If you have, then I am sure you can relate to how hard it is to make your audience focus on your content. The problem with webcasting is that we cannot be sure as presenters, that our audience is focusing on a particular part of the screen. This is easy when you present in person, but during a webcast you have only your voice, your mouse, and your keyboard to try to make it work. Let me give you an example. Imagine that you are attending a webcast, where I am showing an Excel spreadsheet on my screen, and I am discussing the content of the cells in the upper left column. What happens if you are looking in the lower right corner of my screen? Well, by the time you realize that you need to look up to the left, I may have already changed my screen to show something else. As a presenter, I probably did not realize that you missed an important segment of my presentation.

If you have upgraded to Windows Vista, you have probably noticed that the new Explorer application has changed quite a bit. It now provides more useful information with previews, thumbnails etc. However, in Microsoft’s attempt to make Explorer more user friendly they added a section called Favorite Links positioned at the top left corner. This section takes up valuable space, which is better served showing file data.

This add-in will make several basic options more accessible and easier to work with. Included in this article are video tutorials on how to install the Add-in and how to use it. This framework needed to complete this article is the reason I have not written anything else on the blog for over week. I ended up spending over 60 hours on putting together the toolset needed to create the video tutorials and how to share it on the blog (I am tired now but it was all worth the learning experience).

Here is a little teaser of the Add-in!

If you haven’t figured it out yet, I love keyboard shortcuts. They make me happy as every shortcut saves me a few mouse clicks. Previously I wrote an article about the usage of the F2 key but I thought it would be a good idea to show you the rest of the generic shortcuts Windows has to offer. I was talking to a friend earlier about the blog and he told me some of his favorite shortcuts. We quickly agreed that our favorite shortcut is the WIN+E, which opens Windows Explorer. Another of my favorite is WIN+L, which locks the computer.

I use the Windows Search Assistant all the time to find not only files, but also more specifically words or phrases within file(s). You have probably used this technique many times already. It is easy to do but there is one little snag. Windows only allow word and phrase search for file types it can recognize. So what happens when you want to search for a word within .PHP files? I do a lot of web development and as such I work with several web files with a file type that Windows just won’t work well with. Often do I need search for a word or phrase within a number of these unrecognizable file types.
